Downtown Great Barrington: Arts, Dining, and Nightlife
The heart of downtown centers around Main Street, Railroad Street, and Castle Street. It features locally owned boutiques, cultural attractions, and top-rated eateries. In my video, you’ll see a few of my favorite things to do and places to visit in Great Barrington, including:
Berkshire Busk!: A free, summerlong street festival with live music, dancers, and circus acts like chainsaw jugglers.
The Railroad Street Collective: A boutique on Railroad Street with wares from all kinds of local artists, from furniture pieces to hand-designed postcards and everything in between.
Mooncloud: A hotspot for nightlife with some of the best craft cocktails in the county.
Local cafes: There are quite a few in downtown to visit! Boba Train, Fuel, and GB Eats all offer really wonderful espresso options.
The Triplex Cinema: A key community asset that shines in its ability to balance blockbusters with old classics, independent films, and everything in between.
Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center: A cultural staple in the heart of downtown. The Mahaiwe hosts everything from musicians, to screenplays, comedians, public speakers and everything in between.
Number Ten: A terrific steakhouse right next to The Mahaiwe at 10 Castle Street.
Berkshire Food Co-Op: A community-owned organic food market that’s an easy walking distance for the condos and apartments within downtown.
The Berkshire International Film Festival: In the late spring/early summer every year, an international audience comes to the Berkshires for a variety of screenings, q&a’s, and special events. Most of the festival’s programming happens around downtown Great Barrington.

Rich Local History: From Herman Melville to W.E.B. Du Bois
Great Barrington makes it easy to feel connected to American history:
W.E.B. Du Bois: A recently-installed statue of W.E.B. Du Bois in front of the Mason Public Library pays homage to his early life in this town. Du Bois attended the public schools in Great Barrington before going to Fisk University, and subsequently moving on to becoming the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard. The Great Barrington community actually rallied around DuBois to raise the money for him to attend Fisk and begin his academic career.
Stunning architecture: Financing for Du Bois’s education largely came from the First Congregational Church on Main Street, which was attended by Du Bois and his mother. The architecture of the church, which still stands today, will really take your breath away. The current building was completed in 1883, but it retains some elements from a previously-burned structure on the property from the 1850’s.
Herman Melville: Herman Melville also has plenty of ties to the Berkshires, particularly Monument Mountain in Great Barrington. During his hike up the mountain with Nathaniel Hawthorne, he formulated many of the ideas that would inspire Moby-Dick.

Hiking & Biking: Explore Beartown State Forest or hike up Monument Mountain.
Skiing: Enjoy winter sports at nearby Ski Butternut or Catamount Mountain Resort.
Water Sports: You see me walk to Lake Mansfield in this video because it’s that close to downtown. It’s an awesome small body of water that, while not fit for motorboats, is great for swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding.
