Looking for the quaint, historic charm that the Berkshire is known for? Lee Massachusetts is the perfect town for those who are seeking the simple life in a lush, beautiful area.
What is it like to live in Lee?
Known as the “Gateway to the Berkshires,” Lee is a small town with a population of just under 6,000. In 2023, USA Today named Lee as one of the 10 Best Towns in the Northeast. Lee’s popularity is attributed to its beautiful landscapes, plentiful outdoor activities, and historic charm.
Lee’s History
Lee was first incorporated as a town shortly after the Revolutionary War began, but really began to take shape as we know it today around the 1850’s. In those days, Lee was known for its agriculture, paper mills and marble quarries. In fact, the high-quality marble found in Lee has been used in the United States Capitol, the Boston Public Library, and more.
These days, many come to Lee to see the remains of this rich history. Lee’s Historic District showcases the 19th-century architecture that still stands today.
Living in Lee Today
Today, Lee attracts many of a retirement age–according to recent Census data, about 30.4% of the population is over the age of 65.
While the town doesn’t necessarily have the bustling nightlife that may appeal to a younger generation, it does offer much to professionals that are looking for a quieter lifestyle while still needing to commute either full or half-time to other areas. Lee is located right off of I-90, making for a convenient drive into the Berkshires for those who might be coming from New York City.
Lee is a short driving distance from other Berkshire towns like Pittsfield, Lenox, Stockbridge, and Great Barrington–so all of the arts and cultural attractions of both Central and Southern Berkshire County are within easy reach. There are also shopping centers, local eateries, and plenty of outdoor recreation to explore. Whether you’re looking for an active retirement, a getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city, or a great place to raise a family, Lee has plenty to offer!
Real Estate in Lee, MA
If you’re looking for an ultra-modern house, you may have to wait a while to find the right opportunity in Lee. Many of the homes tend to be on the older side, and range from cozy starter houses to grander estates–Lee was no stranger to hosting a Berkshire Cottage or two, as touched on in my blog post about Stockbridge.
While many Lee homes are located in tight-knight neighborhoods, the town’s agricultural history lends itself to many properties still being located on larger lots. If you’re looking for privacy, you’re sure to be able to find it. On the other side of the coin, October Mountain and Goose Pond both have private communities for those seeking active neighborhoods near some of the area’s best natural attractions.
No matter what lifestyle you’re looking for, I’m happy to guide you in your search. Get in touch to learn more about specific areas and options for you.
Recreation and Outdoor Activities in Lee
There are quite a few bodies of water in and around Lee to enjoy for swimming, kayaking, fishing and more. To name just a couple, Goose Pond is a nature reserve with a 2-ish mile hiking loop that allows you to enjoy the views of the rocky shoreline. If you’d like to swim, or utilize a free-to-use public boat launch, head instead to the beautiful Laurel Lake.
For those who look forward to exploring our hills and forests, there are trails that are suitable for all skill levels to enjoy for hikes, biking, or even snowshoeing in the winter. October Mountain and Beartown State Forests are both popular spots, and lots of group hiking experiences begin out of the nearby Kennedy Park. In the woods of the Berkshires, you’re sure to find hidden gems like waterfalls and gorgeous streams, or even remnants of old town thoroughfares!
Lee is located right between Butternut and Bousquet ski mountains, so you’re not too far from the nearest slopes. Canterbury Farm is also nearby for those that enjoy cross-country skiing.
Dining and Shopping in Lee, MA
Downtown Lee is full of independent retailers and restaurants. In downtown, you’re either a walk or a drive away from a plethora of interesting jewelry stores, antique shops, cannabis dispensaries and more. The town is also known for the Lee Premium Outlets, an outdoor mall where you’re sure to find deals on your favorite retail chains.
For a small New England town, Lee has plentiful options for a variety of tastes. You’ll find standard American fare (51 Park is a standout for quality), as well as Indian (MINT, where you can enjoy a lake view with you meal), Mexican (Avocado Cafe, or Baja Charlie’s for California-inspired cuisine), and so much more. The French bistro Cafe Triskele is a great spot for an upscale dinner date–or you could grab a coffee at the Starving Artist Creperie and Cafe.
Once again, if you’re looking for a club to dance in, booming nightlife is not necessarily the town’s (or the county’s) strong suit. However, Moe’s Tavern has an impressive selection of craft beers and whiskeys and is certainly worth a visit! And if you’re looking for a spot to watch the game, The Locker Room has great pub food and hosts a fair amount of events with live music.
High Lawn Farm
Whether you’re planning a move to Lee, or just a visit, you have to put High Lawn on your radar. The family-owned dairy farm’s products can be found all around the area, but visiting the farm is an experience in and of itself. In the warmer months, locals love to go get an ice cream cone while giving the Jersey cow responsible a pat. And if you’re creating a charcuterie board for someone you’d like to impress, their cheeses are a must-grab!
High Lawn Farm also does events for all ages, including more adult-centric activities like cheese tasting and charcuterie building workshops. It’s also a great spot to bring the family, whether you’re visiting the pumpkin patch or entering the kid’s costume contest this fall. In the winter and spring, you can even visit with the newborn calves!
Cultural Attractions and Events in Lee
In Lee, it’s incredibly easy to visit those well-known Berkshire institutions like Tanglewood and Berkshire Theatre Festival. But you don’t have to travel far to get a taste of that famous Berkshire arts and culture!
From late spring to early fall, Lee also hosts a wonderful farmers market where you can go to interact with your new community. Vendors at the market include local farms where you can buy some delicious, fresh, local produce, as well as creations by local artists, bouquets of flowers and more. Each market features a different musician every weekend.
For those in search of other live music, local spots like the Starving Artist Cafe or the Locker Room frequently source great local artists. Lee’s Founders Weekend, which takes place in September each year, is also jam-packed with music as well as other events for the whole family. Hayrides, cemetery tours, craft fairs, races and carnival bites are just a few of the highlights to knit yourself into this community!
